The beginning of the film starts well, throwing the audience in at the deep end as we welcome the character who will later be known as Superman into the world. A doomed plot ensues, introducing the two men whose rivalry will cast a long dark shadow over Superman's life: his father and the military leader General Zod. This opening sequence is perhaps the best part of the film, jam-packed with action, special FX and even a little romance. It is undeniably a hair-raising experience.
As the film progresses, the amazing CGI of Krypton is left behind, and the audience travels with a man whose childhood is portraid through a number of flashbacks; building and developing the personality of the Superman character through anger, love and fate.
In its defence the film has a stronge cast. Kevin Costner,,Russel Crow, Amy Adams and Diane Lane all contribute to the films believability while Henry Cavill is every inch the action hero.
With a running time of 2 hours 23 minutes, Man of Steel meanders its way through by following a seemingly simple plot, and yet, despite the scenes of battle that for many viewers lasted just a little too long, the film lives up to its name.
